Pardon the dust

I’m cutting over to encoding and hosting my own video, which might cause some minor glitches over the next couple days. I can upload videos faster to my server than YouTube/Google Video, and I also have better control over quality. It does mean videos might take a bit longer to buffer, but hopefully you will see a higher quality video and won’t get as much flickering or jumping once the video is loaded. I don’t auto-play the movie when you view the page, which means the player doesn’t start buffering the movie until you hit play. If you are hitting up against the buffer, you can always hit play, and then pause the video (and go get a cup of coffee). Once you see it load to 100% you can watch it without interruption. I’m also still working on tweaks to the actual video player, but hopefully won’t break anything too badly.

Sadly, this will do nothing for my poor camera work.

Wheeeee

After some time in CT for Thanksgiving, we stopped in Ann Arbor on our way home (where I managed to generate a bit more Google news than I expected). Niko got to see Great Grandma, and Janice joined us for the weekend. When Niko spends time with Mom, you really never know what is going to happen. For example, he might end up in the sink.

Sadly, the snow melted before we could get much playing in.

He was great on the flight home and slept the entire flight from Houston. This continues to strengthen our theory that getting him his own seat is the key to air travel. That, and a little Jack Daniels.

After getting back we had a visit from Josh, Amy, and Saffron. There must be something in the water out there in Colorado. Both Saffron and LC are absurdly well behaved. Saffron had a “melt down” once which involved quiet whimpering for about three minutes.

Jul and Amy took the kids to see Santa one day. Nicholas was not a huge fan, but I can’t blame him. Until you understand the scary man in red is going to bring you gifts, it is hard to get past the fact that he looks a bit like a fat red demon. I am having some camera issues but luckily Josh and Amy recently posted their photos.

Niko’s new favorite word is “Wheeeeee” which he says anytime we are within 15 miles of a swing.

Pumpkins, bruiser, dancing

I believe there is some law requiring parents to take photos of their kid in a pumpkin patch each year. Here are some pictures so we don’t get in trouble.

Niko continues to be a spitting image of jack-jack. I couldn’t make his hair do that if I tried.

Niko helped me make chicken soup today. His job was to take things out of the cabinets and bang them. My job was to not spill scalding chicken parts on him. We were a good team.

I also caught some video of the kid doing some bashing, some dancing, and a bit of peek-a-boo. Apologies for the poor camera work. I didn’t miss my calling.

Niko takes first steps, cracks himself up

Niko took his first steps today. He thought this was just about the funniest thing ever.

No other major developments here in Kauai. Although the humidity does make Niko’s curls really show off and the kid looks pretty damn good in a Hawaiian shirt.

Mandy continues to do a much better job both on the blog and with photos.

This yogurt has been brought to you by the letter Y

Before Niko was born I started saving my yogurt tops because it seemed like they would make a cooler toy than an addition to the landfill. Plus I’m fairly confident they don’t use led paint in the manufacturing process. My original vision for how how the toy made of yogurt tops would all come together involved gears, motors, rope, and a CPU. In a rare demonstration of realism, I ended up settling for a permanent marker and some letters and numbers.

The yogurt tops turn out to be great distractions for him at meal time. He ends up throwing the tops more than the food. This is bad for Sumo, but good for our clothing and the kitchen walls. It allows him to be bad in a, “Then I’ll just throw this on the ground if you make me keep eating” kinda way, never internalizing there are 49 more where that one came from. Plus the great thing about “throwing things on the ground” it is never gets old, even after 50 yogurt tops.

For reasons not yet apparent, Niko seems to have gravitated towards the letter “Y.” The funny thing about being a new parent is you are amazed by ANYTHING they do. “Did he just burp? Quick, get the video camera and see if you can get him to do it again.” You are so amazed, that you make him do things over and over. Each time, you are prouder than the last. I imagine once you have five or six of these rug rats, it takes a Nobel Peace Prize to even get you to look up from the newspaper.

Clapping, splashing, and a discovery

Moving fast

Niko has gone from a tentative body drag to an all out crawl sprint. The mean time between perilous situations is about two minutes. Here you see him heading right for the dog bowls. Boy is it fun to dump the water all over the floor.
